My Story

Hi, I'm Sarah Vulture.

I am a fine artist based in Southern California. I work in traditional media, primarily in colored pencil, graphite, ink, and some pastel. I also paint from time to time in acrylic and watercolor.

I am inspired by nature, wildlife and the macabre. I believe there is beauty to be found in both the living and the dead. I enjoy illustrating animals that society labels as “creepy”, “gross”, “bad luck” or “taboo” because the stereotypes, cultural beliefs, and old wives tales surrounding these animals intrigue me.

Themes of Duality, such as life and death, light and shadow, spirit and body are always on my mind as I work on my art. I celebrate death as much as I celebrate life. You can’t experience one without the other. In my breadth of work, you will find nature and wildlife, as well as art of more morbid themes such as the Plague Doctor, and the darker Memento Mori work. I find my work reflects whichever cycle I find myself in. I am either working within my light, or I am working within my shadow. My artwork is my shadow integration, my process of bringing the hidden parts of myself into consciousness.
